A Model for Food Justice

Perdita Butler’s work is a powerful example of grassroots food justice. She understands that access to food is a baseline need and a form of medicine. Through Quarter Acre and a Mule and her community partnerships, she is not only feeding people but also boosting the local economy, supporting small farmers, and building a stronger, more resilient community in Pueblo, one quarter acre at a time. Her mission is a testament to the idea that significant change can grow from small, determined efforts.

Key principles involve optimizing natural processes like pollination and nutrient cycling, using local resources, enhancing biodiversity, and integrating social justice, benefiting both people and planet by reducing reliance on synthetic inputs and empowering communities. Practices include crop rotation, cover cropping, agroforestry, and integrated pest management, while the movement champions food sovereignty and traditional knowledge.
